Zhang Jun (1931-2013) was born in Yantai, Shandong Province. He joined the army in June 1946 and the Communist Party that same year. In the summer of 1960, he began interviewing Lei Feng, an advanced model of the Shenyang Military Region at the time. Zhang Jun took pictures of Lei Feng and spent 79 days with him. He followed Lei Feng to training grounds, conference venues, schools, construction sites, stations, towns, mountainous areas, etc., and took more than 200 photos such as "Lei Feng cleaning a car" and "Lei Feng tutoring primary school students."

When speaking at a Lei Feng Symposium of the Shenyang Military Region in 2013, he suffered a heart attack. The rescue failed and he passed away.
