China opens up (1989-2006)
After crushing the demonstrations on the Square of Heavenly Peace (1989), the economic development gathers even more speed. China has opened itself to the outside world. Politics have disappeared from the posters, with the exception of the
Return of Hong Kong (1997) and the struggle against
Falun Gong (1999). China's leaders (
Deng Xiaoping and
Jiang Zemin) are now seen as ordinary people and even Mao increasingly looks like a movie star. The struggle against
SARS and the preparations for the
Beijing Olympics 2008 receive a lot of attention. Styllistically, photo montage now dominates the posters.
