Ding Yunqu was born in Jiangsu in 1933. He was admitted to the East China Branch of the Central Academy of Fine Arts (formerly Hangzhou Academy of Fine Arts) in 1951. In 1952, he was transferred to the Department of Applied Art of the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. In 1960, he was transferred to the Overseas Exhibition Department of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade.
