Hang Zhiying - 杭稚英 (1900 - 1947) was born in Haining, Zhejiang Province. He was trained at the Commercial Press in Shanghai, and set up his own "Zhiying Studio" in 1922. The posters produced here were at first in the traditional style of Zheng Mantuo, but gradually became more "modern", showing the sophisticated fashion and lifestyle that developed in Shanghai. The studio employed outstanding young artists such as Li Mubai and Jin Xuechen and became extremely influential and productive, with an estimated 80 poster designs per year. Zhiying Studio posters were often created in cooperation, and established the image of the elegant Shanghai woman still idealized today.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War the number of commercial orders declined and Hang reportedly refused to work for Japanese clients. The studio closed and Hang took on debts to support his (former) employees. After the end of the war Hang re-established the studio, but passed away in 1947 - according to contemporary sources due to overwork.
