Liu Zhigui (1945) was born in Huxian, Shaanxi Province. In 1962, he joined the Huxian Peasant Painting Group and started painting in his spare time. He became art teacher in the Jiaqiang school in 1967. Two years later, he was sent to work as an art editor with the Shaanxi Daily (陕西日报, Shaanxi Ribao). From 1976-1984, he was vice-director of the Huxian cultural centre. He now works in the Huxian Paisant Painting Exhibition Hall.
On some early editions of his posters, he is identified as Deputy Secretary of the Party Branch of the Jiaoxi Brigade of the Pangguang Commune (庞光公社焦西大队党支部副书记).
Liu specializes in New Year pictures and peasant paintings.
