Ma Yuru was born in Shaoxing, Zhejiang Province, in 1931. He graduated in 1955 from the Zhejiang Art Academy and took up teaching. He headed the Middle School attached to the Zhejiang Art Academy and was Professor of the Department of Oil Painting. In 1980 he published a book on sketching techniques that became very popular.

Ma is known for his oil paintings.
