Shen Roujian (沈柔坚)

Shen Roujian (1919-1998) was born in Zhao'an, Fujian province. He studied Chinese painting in his early years, then Western painting and started print making in middle 1930’s. He joined the New Fourth Army and engaged in art creating after the Anti-Japanese War erupted. He was the leader of the painting team of the Army Battlefield Aid Group, art researcher of East China Dazhong Daily.

Shen served successively as professor of The Fine Arts College of Shanghai University, executive director of Chinese Artists Association, vice chairman of Shanghai Branch of Chinese Artists Association,  vice chairman of the Chinese Printmakers' Association, etc. In 1991 he won the Outstanding Contribution Award for Chinese New Print.

He signed the New Year print in our collection Rou Jian - 柔堅 (in traditional characters).
