Shen Yaoyi (1943) was born in Shanghai. In 1961, he graduated from the high school affiliated to the Central Academy of Fine Arts. In 1966, he graduated from the Li Hua illustration studio of the print-making department of the Central Academy of Fine Arts. He worked successively in the Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts, the state design department of the National Academy of Chinese Theatre Arts, and Renmin University of China academy of arts, as a professor and doctorial tutor. He is now director of the comic strip art committee under Chinese Artists Association. In 1992, he was listed as an excellent expert by the Ministry of Culture, and as a young and middle-aged expert of prominent contribution by the Ministry of Personnel in 1999.
