Wang Datong (1937-2017), of the Buyi nationality, was from Guizhou. From 1954 to 1957, he studied oil painting at the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, and stayed on to teach after graduation. He used to be the director of the Oil Painting Teaching and Research Section of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts. He participated in and presided over the reform of the oil painting discipline of the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts.

Wang was known for his oil paintings. His works were awarded prizes and were collected by the National Art Museum of China and others.
