Wang Guodong (王国栋)

wangguodongWang Guodong (1931-2019, Beijing), was a portrait painter. In 1964, the portrait of Mao Zedong drawn by Wang Guodong was selected by the central government and confirmed as the standard portrait of Mao in Tiananmen Square. This seventh version of the Mao portrait was hung on the Tiananmen Gate for the first time on 1 May 1964. Wang and his student, Ge Xiaoguang, would continue to paint the eight version that has been used from 1967 until the present.
