Wen Daokuan (1944-1976) was born in Qipan Village, Bao Town, near Dalian, Liaoning Province. In September 1961, he entered the high school attached to the Shenyang Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts, and in September 1965, he was promoted to the Department of Chinese Painting of the Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts. In the summer of 1970, Wen graduated and was assigned to work in the Chaoyang District Mass Art Museum. In order to change the backward state of art work in the Chaoyang area, he actively mobilized the masses to carry out amateur art creation and held art study classes; he went to the rural factories to counsel grass-roots art workers and train art talents.
On 14 August 1976, the art class held in Beipiao ended. In the afternoon, Wen was driving back to Chaoyang when a car transporting pigs was overturned by a sudden mountain torrent. In order to save the lives and property of the people, he rushed into the flood three times to rescue the victims, but he died. He was 32 years old. The Revolutionary Committee of Liaoning Province awarded him the title of revolutionary martyr. The Chaoyang Prefectural Committee of the Communist Party awarded him the title of "A Good Cadre Who Gives Himself to Save People" and ratified him as a member of the Party based on his consistent performance during his lifetime. His ashes are buried in the Tomb of Revolutionary Martyrs in Taishan, Dalian.
