Trained as graphic designer, founder/owner of bars, most famously the Pass By Bar, 108 Nanluogu Xiang, Dongcheng District, founded 1999, popular with affluent young Chinese and foreign hipsters and tourists with many Western craft beers on tap and pizza on the menu. The Pass By Bar was decorated with many images modeled on propaganda posters, some of which were also sold in print. The bar was demolished in the 'redevelopment' of the Doncheng district.

After the Pass By Bar, Xiao Biar established the NBeer pub, brewery, and Beer Bottle Museum in the Xintiandi district, Beijing.
