Yan Jian (1941), also known as Yan Mingjian (严明鉴), hails from Changtu, Liaoning Province. He started his schooling in the Middle School attached to the Lu Xun Art Academy, and graduated in 1965 from the Oil Painting Department of the same Academy.

Yan now teaches in the same department he graduated from.
