Law of the People s Republic of China on Protecting Against and Mitigating Earthquake Disasters

The Law of the People's Republic of China on Protecting Against and Mitigating Earthquake Disasters was adopted at the 29th Meeting of the Standing Committee of the Eighth National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China on 29 December 1997. It came into force on 1 March 1998.

"The purpose of this Law is to protect against and mitigate earthquake disasters and to ensure the safety of people's lives and property.
The Law provides for: earthquake monitoring and protection; protection against earthquake disasters; measures for earthquake emergencies; post-earthquake relief and reconstruction; offences and penalties; etc.
The State encourages and supports scientific and technological research and spreads the use of advanced research results in order to improve the work of protection against and mitigation of earthquake disasters."
