Dong Gang was born in Shanghai in 1928. He graduated from the Drawing Department of the Central Art Academy in 1953 and in 1963, he graduated from the Oil Painting research class of the same Academy. Subsequently, he took up teaching at the Xi'an Art Academy, where he served in various functions and departments for more than thirty years.

Dong is known for his oil paintings and New Year prints. He collaborated with Li Hongren.
