Ni GengyeNi Gengye (1900-1965) was from Chongming, Shanghai. He was one of the most productive creators of calendar posters (月份牌). He worked for the Advertising Department of the British American Tobacco Company (BATCO), for which he designed a.o. the Hademen/Hatamen (哈德门) cigarette advertisements. He also designed the monthly advertisement image of the Qidong Tobacco Company (启东烟草公司), including the very famous picture with an elegant lady on an airfield, wearing a qipao and white gloves (1938).

After 1949 he worked for several publishers, including the Educational Publishing House in Shanghai (上海教育出版社). In 1960 he was employed by the Shanghai Literature and History Study Center.

He created some propaganda posters, but the cruel battlefield scene on the poster in our collection is an exception in his oeuvre.
