Shi Mingde (1929), from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province, taught himself drawing. In 1949, he started creating serial cartoons and took up a serial cartoon study in Shanghai. He joined the Shanghai Youth Daily (Qingnian bao, 青年报) in 1951 and became editor and head of the Arts Department. Later, he joined the editorial board of the Shanghai Liberation Daily (Jiefang ribao, 解放日报) as an arts editor.
