zhangpeichuZhang Peichu (1944, Taicang, Jiangsu Province) entered the Chinese Painting Department of the Shanghai Fine Arts Training School in 1960, but joined the People's Liberation Army two years later. While serving in the Navy, he designed propaganda art. After his demobilization in 1968, he worked as a sailor with the Shanghai Shipping Office, and continued to create art in his spare time. In 1978, he transferred to the Dance Art Department of the Shanghai Drama Academy, where he still works as a designer.

Zhang makes portraits in the 写意 xieyi (interpretive, freely expressive)-style. Some of his works have been awarded prizes and have been included in the collection of the China Art Gallery. He has also designed numerous volumes of comic strips.
