After a huge publicity campaign, Beijing is awarded the Olympic Games of 2008 in 2001. The city is modernized drastically, with broad streets, skyscrapers, office buildings and shopping malls - and sports stadiums designed by world-famous architects, such as the National Stadium (the so-called Bird's Nest).
