China opens up (1989-2011)
After crushing the demonstrations on the Square of Heavenly Peace (1989), the economic development gathers even more speed. China has opened itself to the outside world. Politics have disappeared from the posters, with the exception of the Return of Hong Kong (1997) and the struggle against Falun Gong (1999). China’s leaders (Deng Xiaoping and Jiang Zemin) are now portrayed as ordinary people, but Mao still looks like a demigod. The struggle against crime and against diseases such as SARS and AIDS, and the preparations for the Beijing Olympics 2008, receive a lot of attention. Styllistically, photomontage now dominates the posters.
