Text on the back: "Li Yen-ching, a communist and squad leader of the 6th company of a P.L.A. unit, heard last year Teng Hsiao-ping trumpeting that to fight a tough battle means to "fight a battle of steel". He felt that Teng Hsiao-ping was striking up a tune in opposition to Chairman Mao's teachings while keeping up mum about the subject of class struggle and political line. With great resolve, he wrote what he thought about the matter in a letter to Chairman Mao."
(Teng Hsiao-ping is the old transcription for Deng Xiaoping)
