The Eight Route Army was stationed in Nanniwan, Shaanxi province, in 1941. While stationed there, the brigade created farms, herded livestock, and created an artillery training school, thus becoming a model for self-sufficiency. Here it is applied as metaphor for the self-sufficiency of the PLA.
