Tao Mouji (1912-1985) was from Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. After his graduation from the Shanghai Art Training School, he designed cartoons and propaganda during the War against Japan. He served as an art editor with the World Morning Post (世界震报, Shijie zhenbao) and the Shanghai News Daily (新闻日报, Xinwen ribao). He continued designing for the Huadong (East China) People's Publishing House and the Liberation Daily (解放日报, Jiefang ribao), a Shanghai newspaper that appeared after 1949.
As his poster designs show, Tao was more than a mere cartoonist.
