The designs for the Friendlies were made by Han Meilin; they were publicly announced in 2005. Their names, Beibei, Jingjing, Huanhuan, Yingying and Nini, together form the sentence "北京欢迎你", or "Beijing huanying ni," which means "Beijing welcomes you"
