The group is standing near a red memorial sign for the Huangyangjie Battle of 30 August 1928 (黄洋界保卫战, Huangyangjie baoweizhan). This took place in the Jinggangshan region during the struggle between the communist Red Army and the nationalist Guomindang. The group may be looking at the fortifications from which the Red Army defended the mountain pass, or towards the monument erected for the eventual victory.
