Mai Xiande (1945) worked as an electrical engineer on a Navy corvette. In 1965, during a skirmish with Taiwanese warships, he was seriously wounded but stayed on his post to ensure that the ship continued to function. He survived the ordeal, but the brain damage he suffered would mark him for the rest of his life.
