The South-to-North Water Diversion is a huge project to bring water from South China to the more arid North. The image shows the monumental control room of a row of pumping stations, with admiring visitors. The map on the left shows the 'Eastern Route', in the region around Yangzhou and Shanghai, diverting water from the Yangzi. The row of pumping stations seen through the window has some resemblance to the Jiangdu Water Control Facility, near Yangzhou, built in the 1980s.
