Mao and his main allies during the Cultural Revolution, from left to right: Kang Sheng, head of the Secret Service (and allegedly Jiang Qing’s erstwhile lover); Zhou Enlai, prime minister and secretary of state; Mao; Lin Biao, secretary of defense and the mastermind behind the Mao worship; Chen Boda, Mao’s long-standing private secretary; and finally Jiang Qing, Mao’s wife.
This poster was originally designed in August 1967. A hundred copies were put up on Beijing’s most important streets. In late September, early October 1967, designer Wang Hui copied and enlarged the image to measure 22 metres by 9 metres. Hanging on the west side of Tiananmen Square, more than half a million people, including Mao Zedong himself, saw it during the 1 October festivities.
