The Daqing oilfield, in the cold north-east of China, became the national example for industrial development. Workers obtained a high production rate, inspired by Mao Zedong Thought (see the book in the coat pocket). "Iron Man" Wang Jinxi, the drill operator pictured here, became a model in his own right.
