In 2017, the Propaganda and Education Bureau of the Central Propaganda Department published a 10-poster series marking the 40th anniversary of the adoption of Deng Xiaoping's proposal to reform and open up the nation.

While lip service is paid to Deng, as well as his successors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, the main thrust of the series focusses on Xi Jinping, who is the subject of the majority of the posters.

The Xi Jinping era (2012 -- present) continues. The G20 convenes in Hangzhou (4 September 2016); the marking of 20 years of the Hong Kong Handover (1 July 2017) with former HK Chief Executive Carrie Lam (林鄭月娥) pledging allegiance; the women's volleyball team becoming Olympic champions in Rio (2016); the renminbi joining the IMF (30 September 2016); the launching of the first Chinese-made aircraft carrier, the Shandong 山东 (May 2017).
