In 2017, the Propaganda and Education Bureau of the Central Propaganda Department published a 10-poster series marking the 40th anniversary of the adoption of Deng Xiaoping's proposal to reform and open up the nation.

While lip service is paid to Deng, as well as his successors Jiang Zemin and Hu Jintao, the main thrust of the series focusses on Xi Jinping, who is the subject of the majority of the posters.

Titled "Promoting reform and opening up has successfully pushed socialism with Chinese characteristics into the 21st century" (推进改革开放成功把中国特色社会主义推向二十一世纪), it shows how since the 4th Plenum of the 13 CCP Central Committee, China surged forward under the leadership of the third generation of leaders with Jiang Zemin at its core. The period witnessed the establishment of Jiang's Three Represents Theory (三个代表), the return of Hong Kong (30 June 1997), the return of Macao (19 December 1999), and China's accession to the WTO (10 November 2001).

The Jiang quote in the right hand corner reads "Reform and opening up is the most distinctive feature of China in the new era. Without reform and opening up, there would be no building of socialism with Chinese characteristics." (改革开放是新时期中国最鲜明的特征。没有改革开放，就没有建设有中国特色社会主义。)
